COMMON GROUND

NARANJO 141 is pleased to present Common Ground, a group exhibition on view from October 5 to 22 at 207 Clinton St. in downtown Manhattan.

Common Ground brings together works by Bayo Alvaro, Lily Alice Baker, Justin Chance, Christopher Paul Jordan, Taylor Lee, and Jared Owens; artists who will have shared the experience, either together or individually, of participating in the first year of the Naranjo residency program. This group show will be an annual presentation that will serve as a diary for the program, shedding a larger, more cohesive light on the international, cross-cultural, emerging voices of the residency program.

Drawing from a wide array of practices, the work in Common Ground confronts themes of intimacy, social norms, dislocation, and societal systems. Conceived in college towns, cities, and prisons, the work reflects a commitment to self-reflection, identification and expression. Each of the artists in Common Ground locates their practice within the landscape of cultural dialogue, pushing the boundaries of what’s expected and allowed; presenting accounts on the polarity of gender roles, the expectations placed on women in public spaces, the preconceptions applied to those unfairly ruled out, and the limited possibilities within restrictive networks. Taken as a whole, the works in Common Ground both diagnose our collective ails and open up the conversation for a narrative beyond current borders.
