A man is seated on a chair in an art studio, wearing glasses, a white t-shirt with a flower print, and black pants. He appears to be surrounded by colorful art pieces or canvases leaning against the wall.

Jared Owens

Jared Owens (b.1968) is a justice-impacted artist who works in painting, sculpture, and installation. He brings attention to architectures of confinement, as well as the purposeful “shadowing” of humanity, creating works that make visceral the oscillating experiences of oppression, human dignity, beauty, and erasure. Intending to raise awareness of mass incarceration and its impact on millions of individuals, he reveals correlations between the histories of slavery and the current systemic discrimination of many marginalized communities.

Since 2021, Owens has had a studio at Silver Art Projects in the World Trade Center in New York, where he is also the Artist Liaison. He was one of three finalists for the 2024 Frieze Impact Prize and a 2022-23 Art for Justice Fellow. He was the curator of Anthem X in Winwood, Miami in 2022, featuring 42 artists who challenge personal and collective identities. He has been featured in articles written by The New York Times, Cultured Magazine, The Atlantic, Artforum, The Marshall Project, The Art Mag, The Inquirer, and Post and Courier.

Owens’ recent solo exhibitions include shows at NARANJO 141, Mexico City, MX (2024); Ford Foundation Gallery, New York, NY and Gund Gallery, OH (2023); and Malin Gallery, New York, NY (2022). His work has been selected for recent institutional exhibitions at the Center for Art & Advocacy, Brooklyn, NY (2025); Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, New Jersey, NJ (2024); Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, NY (2024); Berkeley Art Center, Berkeley, CA (2024); and MoMA PS1, Queens, NY (2021). His work resides in the permanent collection of the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY.
